Gold Rush Victories to Wadsworth & Aalberg

Scott & Todd The Gold Rush 50K / Silver Rush 30K was held this Sunday, March 23 at Royal Gorge (course profile). This race always attracts some of the biggest names in the sport and this year was no exception. Think Racing was represented by Scott & Tim Hill and Todd Carter. Our coach, John Aalberg, Torbjorn Sport made the journey from Park City to attend.

A slight freeze overnight, combined with an 8:00 a.m. start made for fast skiing, while the over 70 degree (20 Celcius) weather and blazing sun rapidly warmed up the snow and causing dramatic softening of conditions as the race went on. The two-week old now stayed relatively fast, but good structure, lots of fluro and heavy rills were the key elements of fast skis.

Justin Wadsworth and US Ski Team’s Andrew Johnson broke away from the rest of the field right from the gun. 50 km of hard racing ended with a side by side (.3 seconds separation) sprint for the victory in which Wadsworth took the one-ounce of gold awarded to the winner. Patrick Weaver similarly nipped Scott Loomis for the third place, and secured the overall season win of the Americal Ski Marathon (ASM) series. Jon Engen rounded out the top-5 in the men’s Goldrush division.

In other 50 km action, Tim Hill’s 20th place result was just enough to secure a tie for the 2003/ 2004 Fischer Cup Championship. This is Tim’s 6th Fischer Cup Championship, having secured the title in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Tim will share the 2003/2004 title with UNR coach Tav Streit. Scott Hill placed 29th in the overall, earning him a 4th in class result for the day.

Meanwhile, our coach, John Aalberg dominated the 30 km Silver Rush with Vesa Suomalainen talking second in the overall. My 26th overall position earned me a 4th in class, just behind Murray Farbridge, my coach form the 1999/ 2000 Silver Star Nordic Ski Camp. It was nice to see Murry again. I hope we see more of him and Vesa next year.

Scott wins the 2004 Bjornloppet

Scott & Todd Bear Valley, CA - Bright sun, summer like temps (60 degrees) and a 131 inch snow pack greated Think Racing’s Scott Hill and Todd Carter for this weekend’s 31st annual running of Bjornloppet 20 km freestyle cross county ski race.

The weekend started 3,000 miles away with a JetBlue flight from JFK to Sacramento. Scott picked me up at the airport at 11:00 pm so we could make the 3.5 hour trek from the Central Valley to the high Sierra together. I remember hitting the hay at 6:00 am New York time. (more…)
